Is it Safe? COVID-19 Update – Building Opening for Services

This Sabbath (July 4) we begin the process of gently opening up our building for services again – just the worship service for now beginning with the Children’s Corner at 11:05 am.

It will definitely feel a bit different considering the social distancing, required face masks, and the format of the service (click here to download a guide for attending).

The question you may be asking yourself is: “Should I attend or not?”

It’s a good question and an important one. The question really is about safety – can you attend without being afraid of catching COVID-19?

The answer to that is not 100% clear cut. If everyone who attends wears a face covering and practices appropriate distancing – as they enter, choose a place to sit, and leave again – the risk will stay relatively low.

And please note: Everyone will be required to wear a face mask. If you are not able to do this, please enjoy the service from home. This is not about limiting freedom, but about doing all we can to protect each other in these difficult circumstances.

But, even if we do all we can to follow the guidelines, there are still risks.

If you currently have underlying health concerns, the wisest thing may be to stay home a few more weeks till we see the direction the disease is taking here in our area.

We will continue livestreaming our services and inviting you to interact with us via text messages. You can view it on our website, our Facebook Page, or our YouTube Channel.

We will continue to communicate through our website, our Facebook Page, Golden News (our weekly email newsletter – click here to sign up for it), and the Pastor’s Blog.

We are available by phone and can begin making selective home visits again (click here for contact information for our Elders and Pastor T).

While we are eager to see you in person again, we are more anxious that you stay safe and healthy.

If you choose to participate in church from home for a few more weeks, we support your choice.

If you choose to come and participate in worship at our building, we will support you there too as long as you follow the guidelines.

In either case, we will do our part to point you to Jesus and keep you well and safe.

If all goes well with the fight against COVID-19 in our area, we will continue the opening process.

As always, we are praying for guidance and looking to health professionals and our local and state government for direction.

Stay safe, be patient, and keep focusing on Jesus each day!

Agnes

Don Jacobsen's blog last weekend was titled Agnes and shares some interesting thoughts about church.

Recently I came across a story I first heard 30 years ago. It moved me then; it moves me now.

Dr. Tony Campolo is a sociologist/pastor from Philadelphia who travels all over the country to speak. If you’ve done much of that you know that time zones can be brutal. There are six of them between Philly and Honolulu and when Dr. Tony arrived in Honolulu his body thought it was 9:30 in the morning, but in Honolulu everyone else thought it was 3:30 am.

He went walking the streets for a place to get a bite of “breakfast” and finally found a hole in the wall and went in. Whoever coined the term “greasy spoon” had doubtless eaten here.

The grungy guy behind the counter picked a donut off the plate with his bare hands and put it on Tony’s saucer, then wiped his hand on his previously white apron. Tony paid his bill and at just that moment the door flung open and in walked nine “ladies of the night.” There were ten stools and Tony was in the middle, suddenly surrounded by nine loud, bawdy prostitutes. This was a first. … (Click here to read the entire post.)
